International Seminar on Tiatr at St. Xaviers College, Mapusa
The inaugural function of the International Seminar on Tiatr held at St. Xaviers College, Mapusa underscored the art form’s cultural significance beyond entertainment. Auxiliary Bishop of Goa and Daman, Most Rev Dr Simiao Purificacao Fernandes, who inaugurated the event emphasised that tiatr serves as a mirror to society inspiring reflection on values and playing a crucial role in preserving Goan culture and traditions.
The seminar was organised by Tiatr Academy of Goa in collaboration with St. Xaviers College. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Chief Guest Prof Kyoko Matsukawa, a researcher from Japan. The event was further enriched by the presence of TAG President Mr. Anthony Barbosa, Vice President Mr. Marcos Gonsalves and Member Secretary Mr. Suresh Divkar, along with the Principal of St. Xavier’s College, Prof. Filipe Rodrigues e Melo, and Administrator Rev. Fr. Antonio Salema.
In his address Bishop lauded TAG’s efforts in promoting tiatr and stressed its role in upholding Goan culture and traditions.
Prof. Matsukawa in her speech underscored the importance of tiatr in preserving the Konkani language. Tiatr along with Konkani language forms a crucial part of Goan culture and it is essential that both are protected and nurtured. Tiatr groups travel abroad spreading Goan culture globally she noted.
TAG President Anthony Barbosa shared the organisation’s vision of engaging the younger generation in the art form to ensure its continuity.
Rev. Fr. Antonio Salema, Administrator of St. Xaviers College also addressed the gathering, while Principal Prof. Filipe Rodrigues e Melo welcomed the attendees. The seminar convener, Dr. Fr. Luis Xavier Gomes, introduced the theme and objectives of the event, highlighting its academic and cultural significance.
The seminar continued with a keynote address by Fausto V. Da Costa, Editor of Gulab who provided insights to the evolution of tiatr. Various experts then presented research papers on the subject, contributing to a deeper understanding of the art forms impact on Goan society.
The seminar featured two engaging academic sessions chaired by prominent tiatrists Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo and Mr. Wilson Mazarelo. Research papers covered diverse aspects of Tiatr, including its thematic evolution, sociocultural reflections, and the influence of European drama. Scholars from various institutions presented their research, contributing valuable insights into Tiatr’s artistic, musical, and performative elements. The first session was moderated by Assistant Professor Ankita Zambaulikar, while the second session was moderated by Ms. Devita Khule, an ex-student of St. Xavier’s College. The resource persons included Prof. Cosma Fernandes (MES College, Vasco), Dr. Fr. Luis Gomes (St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa), Prof. Juao Costa (Government College, Pednem), Prof. Remy Dias
(Government College, Quepem), Associate Professor Dharma Chodankar (St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa), Assistant Professor Silvester Vaz (St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa), Assistant Professor Fr. Roman Rodrigues (Rosary College, Navelim), and Ms. Chiara Valosha Miranda (Goa University, Taleigao). Each paper presentation lasted 20 minutes, followed by insightful discussions.
The seminar witnessed a remarkable turnout, with a total of 191 students actively participating from various institutions, including Rosary College, Navelim; Government College, Pednem; Government College, Quepem; Government College, Sankhalim; Harmal Panchkroshi College, Arambol; Dhempe College, Miramar; Fr. Agnel College, Pilar; and Goa University, Taleigao. Their engagement in discussions
and interactions with scholars demonstrated a keen interest in Tiatr studies and its academic exploration.
A cultural program showcasing the rich tradition of Tiatr was held soon after lunch.
Students of St. Xavier’s College performed songs of legendary tiatrists from yesteryears, paying tribute to the artistic heritage of Tiatr. This was followed by a comedy performance by students, which brought a lively and entertaining element to the seminar, highlighting the humorous and engaging aspects of Tiatr as a theatrical art form.
The event concluded with a valedictory session, where Mr. Prince Jacob, a celebrated tiatrist, served as the Chief Guest. His insights into the evolving landscape of Tiatr and its potential for the future resonated with the audience. The valedictory session was compered by Nigel Pereira, a present student of St. Xavier’s College. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by TAG Vice President, Mr. Marcus Gonsalves acknowledging the contributions of the organizing team, faculty members, student volunteers, and all participants.
